Welcome to Julie’s Cultured Kitchen! “Cultured” is a wonderful word, as it has so many meanings, all of which have impacted my life.
culture | ˈkəlCHər |
noun
Culture can be defined as the cultivation of bacteria in an artificial medium containing nutrients. Obviously, sourdough starter is a culture, and I have loved learning how to cultivate this wild yeast and use it to create wonderful baked goods that nourish the bodies and souls of friends and family.
Culture is also defined as the customs, arts, and achievements of a particular nation. I grew up in a family with two strong ethnic cultural identities. My father was from Syria, and my mother’s side of the family is from Greece. I grew up immersed in both cultures, learning to appreciate the music, dance, and art of both cultures, but especially the FOOD.
Coming from such a strong ethnic background also helped me to appreciate and relate to many other cultures. I had the good fortune to grow up in the city of Oakland, California, and years later teach public school in San Jose, California, both cities with richly diverse communities composed of many different cultures and ethnicities. I have always believed that though we all come from different backgrounds, we all have more in common than we think. I have a knack for finding, creating, and maintaining connections that bring people together, and one of the easiest ways to create these connections is through food.
My interest in different cultures has also fueled my passion for travel, and I have spent the last two-plus decades traveling the world with my husband and son, learning and appreciating the highlights of the different countries we visited.
cultured | ˈkəlCHərd |
adjective
Cultured also means characterized by refined taste and manners and good education. I am an artist at heart, always carrying with me a deep appreciation of beauty, presentation, and self-expression. This is particularly true of my cooking. With refined taste comes FLAVOR, which to me is just as important as aesthetics, and I strive to make sure the foods I prepare are as delicious as they are beautiful.
I am passionate about education and spent 26 years in a career as an elementary school teacher. I’ve always had an insatiable curiosity to learn about innumerable topics. I’ve derived great joy from sharing my knowledge with others and helping people, both children, and adults, discover the joy in accomplishing something that they weren’t able to do before.

For all of the above reasons, I am opening my CULTURED kitchen to you, as a classroom where I can share my knowledge and help you to experience the joy of learning how to do something new. I’m following my passion for food and connecting with people. Come let us connect through the process of baking bread or creating something delicious!
